Most Google Business Profiles are lying by omission.
Not on purpose. The owner filled in what the setup wizard asked for, hung a few photos, and moved on. But Google's AI doesn't read a profile the way a person does. It reads it looking for proof. And right now, the businesses winning the map pack are the ones who learned to feed it.
I call this the Local Guide Method: your customers do your SEO for you, running on a system instead of a hope. I've watched this play out across 2,300 Google Business Profiles. Here's what's moving rankings right now, and the piece almost nobody teaches.
Photos have to prove the claim, not decorate the page
Google's vision model looks at every photo on your profile and asks one question: does this look like what you say you do? A stock photo of a smiling family proves nothing. A real photo of the actual service, the inside of the shop, the team doing the work, that's evidence.
Reviews are read as sentences, not stars
Eighty five-star reviews that all say "great service" tell Google almost nothing. One review that says "Mike fixed our AC same-day in The Woodlands, fair price" tells Google exactly what you do and where. Ask for the story, not the stars, and reply within a day repeating the service and the city back naturally.
Behavioral signals decide who wins the close call
Being ranked #1 with a 3% click rate loses to being ranked #3 with a 12% click rate. Google watches what happens after someone sees you: do they call, get directions, or scroll past. Your first three photos and your exact category do more work here than anything else on the page.
Services and attributes are the fields everyone skips
Category alone hasn't been enough for a while. If you're a salon and "Services" is empty, Google has no way to match you to "balayage near me," even if you're the best in town. Twenty minutes filling out real language your customer would type is the cheapest ranking boost available.
A living profile is a trusted profile
A Google Post from months ago reads as a business that might be closed. One Post a week, a seeded Q&A, and accurate hours keep the profile looking alive, which is exactly what Google rewards.
The piece almost nobody teaches: model the ecosystem
Here's where it gets interesting, and it's the part of the Local Guide Method I care about most.
Say you run a dental practice. A photo of a chair, a tray of instruments, a hygienist mid-cleaning: Google's AI vision can't always tell that apart from a general practitioner's exam room. The equipment looks similar enough. Vision alone doesn't know if you're a dentist or a doctor.
The words around the photo do. A caption that says "routine cleaning at [practice name], Houston dentist" removes the ambiguity vision can't resolve on its own. A review that mentions "the dentist" and the actual procedure does the same job from a different angle.
That's what modeling the ecosystem means: well-written reviews with the right keywords, and photos with real captions describing exactly what they show. You're not decorating your profile. You're translating it into language Google's AI can verify instead of guess at.
Run these five signals for thirty days, model the ecosystem while you do it, and you'll usually see movement before a single backlink or website change. That's the whole point of the Local Guide Method: your customers write the proof, the system keeps it running.
